8 Colorful Activities And Ways To Celebrate Pride Month

June is Pride Month, in which we celebrate and support members of the LGBTQ community. It all started as a commemoration of the Stonewall Riots in New York back in June, 1969, which occurred in response to a police raid on Stonewall Inn, a well-known gay bar in Greenwich Village. Since then, it has become a time to represent the movement for LGBTQ+ rights throughout the nation.

There are many ways to celebrate Pride Month, from attending public festivals—which are opening up again in some areas—to hosting private parties with close family and friends. Ultimate Confetti can add the right splashes of color to your celebrations with pride-themed confetti and streamers. Check out what we have to offer here!

1. ATTEND A PARADE OR FESTIVAL

If you’re fortunate enough to be in an area where society is opening up again, attending a public festival, parade, concert, or other event can be a great way to celebrate Pride Month! You don’t have to identify as LGBTQ yourself in order to attend. Go represent the movement, throw some confetti, and support equality for all! If you’re not sure what pride events are going on near you, this calendar provides information for cities all over the globe.

2. DECORATE YOUR HOME

Hang a rainbow flag in your window, hang up some pride-themed art, plant flowers, and find other ways to add splashes of color to your home. The pride flag itself is an integral part of the movement, with each of its eight colors representing an aspect of the movement:

  • Pink for sex
  • Red for life
  • Orange for healing
  • Yellow for sun
  • Green for nature
  • Turquoise for magic
  • Blue for peace
  • Purple for spirit

Decorating your home is a great way to show the LGBTQ members of your community that you are an ally while spreading some awareness of important issues.

3. HOST YOUR OWN MINI-PARADE

If you don’t have an event happening near you or if you’re not comfortable gathering in large groups just yet, you might try hosting your own smaller celebration. Gather a few loved ones together for your private festivities and have some fun! Many events will still be occurring virtually this year too, so this is a great way to tune in and celebrate!

4. SUPPORT LGBTQ+ ARTISTS

LGBTQ+ artists have made wonderful contributions in the fields of music, artwork, film, and literature, and more and more of these kinds of artwork represent the LGBT community than ever before. Take some time to enjoy a show, read a book, or admire the many pieces of art created by LGBTQ artists. Diversify your library, and enjoy it with your friends. You might host a movie night, start a book club, or go to a concert if there’s one in your area.

5. CREATE YOUR OWN ART

If you’re of a more artistic bent yourself, you might try creating your own pride-themed artwork. Compose a song, write a story, paint a picture, create a sculpture, design a t-shirt, make some greeting cards, or do anything else to express yourself! It’s a month dedicated to self-expression, after all, so get creative! Creating pride-themed art is also a great way to involve your family in the movement.

6. PROMOTE INCLUSION AT YOUR WORKPLACE

Pride month is all about inclusivity, and one of the places where inclusion is most important is in the workplace. Go out of your way to make sure everyone at your place of work feels included, valued, and validated. It doesn’t take much—just a friendly smile and conversation can make all the difference. Of course, you might also consider organizing a corporate event or reaching out to diversity groups in your organization if you want to do something a little more formal.

7. REP THE COLORS

Find ways to rep the colors, either at events or in your day-to-day life. Wave a flag at parades, wear a themed t-shirt, replace the laces on your shoes, or wear a pin. Choose the flag that you prefer, whether that’s a rainbow, lesbian, bi, ace, or any other color flag, and carry it with pride. Biodegradable confetti or rainbow streamers can rep the movement at events, while your outfit can let people know you are an ally everywhere else.

8. DONATE TO A CAUSE

Finally, donating to an LGBT cause can be a powerful way to support the community. Pride month is as much about promoting equal rights as it is about self-expression, so find an LGBTQ charity in your area and give them some of your time or funds. That’s what it’s all about, after all—helping one another and promoting peace, love, and prosperity for all.
